The Way to Rainy Mountain, by N. Scott Momaday

Review

"It is a beautiful book; honest, unique, dignified, and told with a simplicity that approaches the purest poetry. It is a book for all seasons, for all readers.""Written with great dignity, the book has something about it of the timeless, of that long view down which the Kiowa look to their myth-shrouded beginnings.""Mr. Momaday retells the Kiowa myths that he learned from his grandmother, speculates on the actual history they may symbolize, and describes, with infectious nostalgia, the Indian life he knew as a child. There are distinctive illustrations by the author's father, Al Momaday. The whole book is most attractive; beautifully written, full of gentleness and dignity."

I'm an avid student of the story of life ( pre-white man) as a Native American. Scott Momaday is a master craftsman with language and he melds the memory of times past with what those memories mean now to a man of Kiowa heritage. I will re-read this consuming opportunity to feel something of what the noble life of a free people was like. The feeling of empathy with these original Americans is warm and exciting. This book makes me feel like I can understand something that I will never truly be able to know. Thanks to Scott Momaday.

This is not really a typical novel or book, and may be a little abstract for some readers, but if you are interested in Native American mythology, this is an interesting book to read. I highly recommend it. One thing to understand before reading this book is that it is narrated in three "voices" (easily distinguished from each other because they are separated into paragraphs). T

Each brief Kiowa tale is told three ways: the traditional tale as told by his father, then as by a historian, and third by the author as his living experience of nature. Unique and delicately wrought

I see this book’s project as the preservation of some of the oral tradition – i.e. mythology – that the Kiowas have handed down for generations. I also think this book is intended as an explainer – a translation, even, from Kiowa to White People. In providing the three voices, we have a kind of Rosetta Stone to help navigate the three spaces.Since this work includes traditional, historical and personal segments, each supporting the rest, it is, by definition, a hybrid discourse. It takes into account the voices of both academic and non-academics, and blends them in a way that purely intellectual examination of these stories would not. We are given a much more complete work, this way.

I loved the story. I was super blessed by being in Santa Fe at the same time Jill Momaday presented her beautifully created film production of Return to Rainy Mountain at the Film Festival. Seeing her and her father as we, the audience, were blessed by their relationship and the importance of story became so richly shared with us. The book speaks volumes to us as we embrace this story!!

I enjoyed the stories in this book. Momaday does a good job relating the historical oral history of the Kiowa people in a way that jeeps you anting to read more. I could hear his wonderful voice as I read. The personal family stories he offers give even more clarity to the overall book. I would recommend it to anyone who has an interest in the Kiowa people, to Native American folklore.

One of the most amazing books. The 3 perspectives are amazing: the myth, the historical, and the modern native view.

I read this book as part of an assignment for a college English course. I would not have read it on my own but am so glad that I did. If you love good storytelling, get this book. This book is great for getting a glimpse into true Kiowa life and understanding how the Kiowa came into there own all those years ago. I also enjoyed the suspense offered in many of the stories, as well.
