A good editor might have helped with the many meandering pages that beat subjects to death that are of little interest in the first place and do nothing to support the author's position in a current context. A good publisher would never have allowed this "book" to go into print and saved readers a lot of wasted time and money.If someone has no skills as a writer they should hire a ghost writer as George W Bush and Sarah Palin had the sense to do. It speaks volumes about the author when people of the low caliber of Bush and Palin are smart enough to hire people to do the actual writing and editing of their books so that all they have to do is scribble something in the books at promotional signings.What the author misses completely is how effective the change in the FCC rules under President Reagan (another dim bulb) have been in concentrating media ownership in the hands of a few billionaires. Many Americans get only the misinformation provided by the Fox News and Wall Street Journal and other properties owned by Australian media mogul Rupert Murdoch. I doubt that Reagan and his henchmen had no idea that they would be handing so much power over to an Australian when they started the ball rolling at the FCC. This ball has continued to be pushed along by both parties at the same time as funding for public radio and television programing has been drastically cut.With a thread running from Ronald Reagan (seen one redwood you have seen them all, and who could not remember his actions that led to the Iran-Contra illegal and traitorous actions of Oliver North and George H Bush, or the holding onto US hostages by the Iranians during the election campaign and later providing the Iranian government with crucial parts for their air force fighters after taking office) and a George W Bush selected by Justice Scalia and Clarence Thomas and Sandra Day O'Connor to be the president of the USA, and now Sarah Palin who is without a doubt the most mean spirited and ignorant person to hold elected office in the state of Alaska, and bailed on her responsibilities as a mother of a child with Down's syndrome and her responsibilities as the governor to work as a commentator on Fox News (and get a better wardrobe and hair and makeup artists), it is difficult to see how much further we can sink as a nation and maintain even a semblance of a republic, having never operated as a democracy.
I really liked this book--and laughed out loud a few times too. I would happily to recommend it to anybody who likes to read politics/satire/humor.A few things:Yes, this is a collection of loosely-connected essay-type writings. I rather liked that, though I see others don't. I like nonfiction, read a lot of it, and this isn't the only book 'organized' in that way...doesn't bother me at all.Also, since I am an Old Person, I ended up having to look up some of his references! How embarrassing is that? G. Gordon Liddy I get, right? Stuff like the word meep....not so much.I did, however, appreciate the mental and verbal nimbleness of a writer who can interweave references to Constitutional framers and to some (to me) obscure character from The Simpsons. That's the kind of thing I read for. Writing, that is.And then there is the humor factor.How can you not laugh at the description of Larry King asking, "...even if evolution is true, why are there still monkeys?"Or, at the statement of a pastor (in favor of teaching creationism in his local school) that, "We've been attacked...by the intelligent, educated segment of our culture."The humor is, clearly, based on the effects of absurdity, as most good stand-up is.Lastly, yes, this is all written from a liberal point of view.Whatever floats your boat, but I'm not sure personal political leanings should keep any of us from reading anything--even the stuff from the Other Evil Side, whatever that may be for you.
This is such an amazing book, I really cannot recommend this highly enough.Please do not get distracted by the title, this is not a left-wing critique of America, it is a celebration of the fact a country can have a place for genuine cranks and eccentrics, but despairs over the anti-science anti-reason element infecting the Conservative Movement and through that the government of a Superpower. It is a plea for cranks to be put in their place, on the fringe. It shows the danger of when anti-enlightenment values are put at the centre of government of a country built on those enlightenment values.This book is a must read for anyone who wants to understand how a country that put a man on the moon can see it scientists feel the need to march in the streets to protest in favor of reason and logic just 48 years later. The story of Shishmarreff is depressing on a global level and it shows how corporate power has led to the planet facing an existential threat. The story of Terri Schiavo will make you angry when you see how a political party in the search for short-term political tactical advantage can put people working in jobs most of us would not dare go near, through personal hell and ruin the final moments a man gets to spend with a wife who is dying. It is an indictment of a conservative movement and poltical party that has embraced it and the role they are playing in modern American life, but really it is an indictment more of their enablers in the media, a group who see themselves involved in entertainment not information delivery, a group who see themselves as celebrities covering celebrities rather than a group of people who's job it is to communicate truth.It skewers what he calls the 3 rules of Idiot America but does not deny the rights of Americans to be Idiots, in fact he celebrates the authentic American Cranks but just asks that they no longer be embraced by a political party and idealogical movement that has long ago lost its bearings. It is a cry for engaged citizenship and a love letter to his country.Idiot America is more patriotic than any book with bald eagles and American Flags on its cover, it is the True Patriotism of a man asking for his country to achieve its most noble aims, not the crude Nationalism of a Conservative Movement that see's a country that does not exist trying to bring back a country that never was.READ THIS BOOK
