My main issue with the book is how many mistakes there are. There are typos and multiple occasions where the answers to practice questions have been wrong, which is annoying when trying to review concepts for such an important exam.Other than that, the book is a good starting point for GRE review. It gets you slightly familiarized with test format and what will be covered. It's better than jumping straight into difficult review, but lacks strategy techniques and questions as difficult as what might be expected on the exam. I did not feel even slightly prepared for the GRE until I started using Kaplan's book and Manhattan Prep's practice problems.
This is a really great book and it really breaks things down in a way that helps those of us who might be terrified of standardized tests (like me.) The only reason I'm not giving this 5 stars is because I found that many of the questions didn't reflect what was found on the test. I took all of the practice tests and read this book cover to cover and still was not very impressed with my score. While it may not be the books fault (I've never been great at standardized tests), I was still disappointed that this book didn't fully prepare me for what I would see on the test.
It's a good book, but there are a couple of typos that are just REALLY annoying. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out why I kept getting the wrong answer on a drill (Drill 8, page 179), and then I realized that the answer key has the question written differently than the question. Frustrating!Also, it's clear that the typo is in the question, since the answer choices don't make sense. The answer key has the question written correctly.
I like their basic premise: practice the specific things you will be tested on. This isn't foolproof, of course, but I'm finding their math questions challenging (in a good way - I'm waaay out of practice) and their vocab sections seemed to have good tips too (I feel a bit more comfortable with vocab right off the bat). Lots of practice questions, good explanations and shortcuts. I like it.My big issue is that I'm finding mistakes (like WRONG answers to questions) and misprints all through the book. But what's even more frustrating is trying to Google "Princeton Review Cracking the GRE errata" and coming up with NOTHING. I get it, nobody's perfect, but at least admit you made mistakes and make it easy to find the corrections. There is NO excuse for Princeton Review not to have this info easily accessible when it could be on their website within moments of figuring out there's a problem.
Very clear and concise. Preparing to take my exam so I will update on the score I get. I think this manual covered all the topics and useful strategies. One thing: you can't just read this and take the test. You actually need to practice the strategies. I'm generally a great test taker, but I never really had a set strategy which I'm sure is the difference between a decent score and a spectacular one.
I am incredibly disappointed in this product and will not be purchasing study materials from Princeton Review again. My first critique is that it fails to give you the formulas and techniques for properly solving a problem (its first suggestion is often explaining how to guess - which would be fine if the book also gave you the proper mathematical method, but it doesn't). This is a small issue compared to the fact that across several chapters (and I have several more to go), the answers are completely wrong. My suspicion is that the people who wrote the book simply modified some numbers from previous editions, but failed to change the answer accordingly. As a result, there are several answers I spent way too long trying to figure out, only to realize that it wasn't my error, it was the book's (for example, one problem omitted parentheses - so obviously I got a totally different answer). Super confusing, frustrating, and unreliable!
I must say this book actually was huge help in preparing me for the GRE. It teaches you all the strategies on how to take the exam. I only had to take the GRE once, and I got a good score. Which is big deal for me.
Great book - I'm absolutely satisfied. Highly recommended! A bought a used book just for few dollars - almost for free, but it looks like a new one, great condition. Don't pay more, buy used books. Keep in mind that the books were previously used by such good students as you are, nothing spoiled.
