I read the 2nd in the series through my local library, and enjoyed it so much that I purchased the rest of the series. This book is the first in the series, and it is about a group of young girls who attend and live at an old ballet academy where strange things happen. In this particular one, the girls start getting their stuff stolen from their rooms and they decide to solve the mystery of who is behind all of it. The ending was pretty far fetched and a little strange, definitely went in a different direction than I was expecting. I did not enjoy it as much as the other book but it was still a quick, fun read.

The climax and resolution were not compatible. The story needed at least 25-50 pages more to do character development, conflict development and a satisfying resolution. BORING!

This starts with a mean girls vibe, and it looks like it may just play itself out as a "scholarship-student-tormented-by-the-less-talented-rich-girls" drama set in a ritzy ballet school. Wrong. That gets turned around very quickly and the book morphs into a "school-girl-besties-chase-the-ghost" romp that's just right for a middle grader who likes a little bit of creepiness with her girlfriend bonding. No plot spoilers here. Anyway, the plot hardly matters. It starts as a mystery and takes a sharp turn into "eeevil", but it's evil the way "Abbott and Costello Meet the Mummy" was evil. That's O.K. by me; how creepy do you want your middle graders' books to be?What we do get is a nice cast of BFF's. Madeleine is the super talented ballet student who is a new scholarship student at a prestigious residential ballet school. Right off the bat she crosses Ophelia, the reigning prima donna. Ophelia has a sidekick who is pretty independent, and there are two twins who are secondary sidekicks. Madeleine proves her mettle in a skirmish with the head mistress, and the fearless five are formed. Now, I'm being a bit of a wiseguy, but actually it is very nice and entertaining to have a book where the new girl is nervous, has a bumpy start, shows the right stuff, and forms a bond with some people who will be her real friends. I know that's a little out of fashion, currently, in middle grade books, but I'm happy to find it when I can. It helps that all of the girls have a sense of humor, a little vinegar, and engage in good-natured and rather clever banter. So, it's cheerful, high energy, deeply implausible, and zips right along. A nice middle grade find. Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book in exchange for a candid review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.

Madeleine's mother had made a lot of sacrifices to get her into the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance, the "most prestigious ballet school in the country." She had that scholarship and that was going to be a big help. Dario was kind of a creepy looking place and Madeleine was definitely going to be homesick. It was going to be more difficult because instead of being by far the best dancer at her old school, they all were here. Madame Puant would be the instructor, but soon trouble would erupt. Madeleine touched her "mother's antique gold necklace" for comfort, but she'd need a lot more than that soon.It wasn't long before one of the girls was giving her the stink eye and pummeling her with criticism. "I told you not to crowd me, you freak." Making friends would be pretty difficult for Madeleine at Dario, but making enemies seemed easy. That aside, everything about the place was weird and gave her the chills. "Something was wrong," she thought to herself, the house had a touch of evil in it somewhere. Madeleine was shocked when she found someone had actually stolen her necklace from her room. It had to be that nasty bully, Ophelia, or was it?There was a "thief at Dario," but whomever it was, it wasn't of the human kind. All the girls were missing sentimental items, including Ophelia. "I think it's the house itself. I think we are dealing with a ghost." Perhaps Ophelia was right. Emma and Sophie, the twins, and Kayley were ready to join Ophelia and Madeleine in the search for answers. They were going to head into the tunnels underneath the school. "The smell of mold, mildew and graves crept into Madeline's nose," but there was something or someone else down there. Their midnight search was about to uncover evil lurking beneath the school, but could they face it?This is a creepy new tale at the Dario Quincy Academy of Dance young readers will love. This tale, of course, has just the right amount of fear factor to keep readers turning those pages. The book is perfect for confident or reluctant readers who are just embarking on a quest for the eerie and unusual. The characters and plot are not particularly well-developed, but will definitely encourage a move into the next in the series, Stolen Luck, to find out what goes on in that creepy academy. The new kid on the block, the bully, the quest for friendship, rivalries, and the ghostly unknown will be of high interest to some readers. It's a quick, fun read for young readers.THE DARIO QUINCY ACADEMY OF DANCE:#1 Leaping at Shadows#2 Stolen Luck#3 The Cursed Ballet#4 Twin DangersThis book courtesy of the publisher.
