This critic makes a big produktion of "He (Mr Heinlein) cannot be held accountable by standards that simply didn’t exist in his time."And then he cracks down (craps on) everthing he doesn't like. Because it is not the Politically Correct flavor of the month. Today, in the wonderful, bright, just US of A...Apparenly Mr Heinlein is very controversial? He would have loved that. His books are selling to another new generation? And the though police are apparenly trying to censure his books? He must be laughing in his grave. The critic makes such a production of "I come to defend Mr Heinlein, not to bury him..." " But of course he is racist , sexist , this - ist, that - ist... "All he does is to complain about what he didn't like when he read the books as a child. And that can't have been so very long ago...Dear fellow readers, don't waste your money on this one.

I have read at least twenty Nuttall books. All fun and good stories. A little left leaning but I can put up with a little PC and enjoy a good book. Mr. Nuttall should stick to fiction. He slams great characters and all but accuses them of racism, sexism, and homophobia. He apologizes for Heinlein because of the time that he was born in. Although I enjoy Nuttall's books, he has never created characters like the master. If anything his characters have little backbone.

The author takes pains to tell you this is a pretty balanced book, and in fact I think it is. Unlike, for example, Spider Robinson's "RAH RAH R.A.H." of some years ago, Christopher Nuttall is not a complete fanboy. He admits there are Heinleins he can no longer read. He is largely successful in cataloguing flaws in Heinlein's books. He's also clear on what were the successes of Heinlein's work, and he points out that many flaws or shortcomings likely arise from Heinlein having to work with, or under, unsympathetic editors. The main question Nuttall poses is, is Heinlein still relevant? His qualified answer is yes (so we can let him live). He points out that that is because Heinlein stories are character driven and people are still facing the choices Heinlein wrote about. I agree. Secondary questions include the perennial, "Is Heinlein a racist/sexist?" Nuttall's answers are evidence based "No"s, though he cuts it pretty close sometimes. The "for his time" argument comes up fairly often, just a little too often for my taste, making it sound like an excuse. Heinlein was _never_ sexist IMHO, nor racist. Even in Farnham's Freehold.Nuttall quietly slips some jabs at Social Justice Warriors and their kind; not much, but just enough to make me like him. I may have to read some of his novels (though they haven't appeared attractive to me up till now.)The string of reviews of Heinlein's works may get a little wearying for the reader, but he uses his reviews to build his case, summarized in the last few chapters, so it's worth seeing him present his evidence. One area I really enjoyed was Nuttall's survey of tropes Heinlein is likely responsible for. I didn't realize Heinlein is the father of the generation ship, and Nuttall draws an interesting comparison between Heinlein's powered armour and the E. E. Smith's Galactic Patrol armour, a connection I never drew myself.I'm glad I read it; I'm also glad it's very economical, because there's nothing particularly new or insightful here. But it's an interesting window into modern thinking.

The author could have written a better book had he been able to keep his politics out of the review. While I agree with his defense of Heinlein's writing as it reflects the social environment within which he wrote, Nuttall intersperses his observations on the current political climate far too often. It lessens the impact of the arguments. I found it difficult to finish the book because of the asides and detours from his stated purpose.

For all of us who love, or maybe used to love, Robert Heinlein, this is the book that restores or enhances that love. It’s also like speed rereading, with all those pleasures concentrated. And it examines why he has been maligned in recent criticism, and make a successful rebuttal. And it’s fun.

This book is from a reader of Science Fiction (and a writer) concerning Robert A Heinlein.Chris reviews most of Heinlein's works and talks about what works & doesn't work for a modern reader.Unlike many reviewers, Chris understands the real restrictions that Heinlein worked under. Too many modern reviewers "judge" Heinlein only by today's standards not by the standards of when Heinlein wrote the books. At the same time, Heinlein still has something to say for modern readers in spite of real flaws in Heinlein's writing.Heinlein's work is still enjoyable for readers today and I suspect that many of his critics fiction may not last as enjoyable reads as long as Heinlein's works have.
