Usually I like books by Amy Cross. This one, however, was a little too incredible to be enjoyable. A town dislikes a woman who cleans the church (she is unlikable, to be honest), and when she "disappears" , which she does not really and they know it, they make not the slightest effort to help her or find her. This was so inhuman, that, wartime or not, it made no sense really. The townspeople are generally the standoffish, fairly unfriendly type, but this was going too far. I also could not make out the layout of the church, and where the pastor's rooms really were. If there is only one door in the entire building, surely it opens into the church. How come he comes in there and always finds himself in a corridor? And another thing (sometimes the smaller details left out make such a difference!) does the pastor never, ever have a meal?? He gets up and there's a kitchen but no mention of a breakfast. He comes in of an evening, and again he goes to bed, seemingly without a snack or a dinner. He does not buy provisions, and neither do the congregation ever offer him anything! Maybe Amy Cross wote this one in too much of a hurry. Not satisfactory at all.

Another great book from Amy. I have read between 10-15 books so far and I have yet to read a bad one. This is a good stand-alone book, at least at the moment, Amy is so prolific (over a 100 books so far) that she may be working on a sequel. If you want a relatively clean book (the main character is a priest) then this is a good one to try. The story takes place during WWII and involves a nice little village church and the nice little village around the church. History/War/Europe/Haunting. What's not to love?

I enjoyed this novel. At 462 pages, I thought it would take a while to complete. However, I read “The Haunting of Briarwych Church” in 2 days. The plot was enjoyable and fast-moving. The main characters were realistic and empathetic. Initially, I found Father Loveford to be a self-righteous prig. He was so sanctimonious! He wanted to help the villagers grow spiritually, but when he spoke to them, he had a bombastic, “preachy” stance. It was easy to see why the villagers didn’t show up for Sunday service. Loveford didn’t want to incur expenses upon the parish, so he didn’t ask his bishop for the money to buy blackout drapes. So he spent his evenings in the dark. Meanwhile, he indulged his vanity by feeling like a martyr for his church because he sacrificed his comfort. I’m sure he patted himself on the back for that! I disliked this priest so much. However, as the novel continued, I saw a positive development in his character! Amy Cross showed the reader the inner heart of Loveford. I saw his sincerity, his self-doubt & insecurities. He became a sympathetic character. He went out of his way to help any parishioner who asked including those who disliked him. He was positive Judith Prendergast wasn’t “real”. At the novel’s conclusion he realizes she is real, & he realizes the damage she wrought upon her daughter Lizzy. Speaking of Lizzy, Loveford was sure he couldn’t marry a woman like her because she was too young for him. At the end of book 1, he awaits the time when Lizzy becomes cognizant so he could marry her. This novel isn’t simply about Briarwych Church. It’s also about the development of Father Loveford & the villagers, and the devolution of Lizzy Pendergast.I’ll be reading book 2 “The Horror of Briarwych Church” now.I love Amy Cross’s novels!

The Haunting of Briarwych Church by Amy Cross is so much more than a mere ghost story. This novella is a mystery-thriller, revolving around a single decision by an entire village to turn their backs on a woman in need. Father Loveford appears to be in denial about everything around him, but his cynicism leads to his discovery of several tragic secrets, all tied together by the late Judith Prendergast.Rather than lean heavily on the paranormal aspects of the story, Cross does a great job utilizing the wartime setting and the desperation of a community without hope. The conflicts of faith and reason highlight the horrors of human nature. Not once could I guess where the author would take this story. Definitely one of my favorite Amy Cross stories.

Another fast read by Any Cross! The characters are well done and you keep hoping that everything will work out and that the priest will be able to save the love of his life!! However, as always, our author leaves us with hope but no final finish. One needs to use their imagination and hopefully, it will be a happy conclusion!

Good plotline, priest sent to a church in a village where the church has a malevolent spirit attached. The new priest has no knowledge of what has preceded before him. As things processed, the priest is now confronted with strange occurrences. Hard for me to put down!

The book starts out well enough and hits all the standard gothic tropes. I just found the end to be a little weak for my taste. Make no mistake, it's not bad and fits in well enough, I just think the author, whose work I've read before, can do better.

by Me Cross! Some typos but all in all a fun and creepy ride. A real pageturner! So much so that I finished it a few hours. Became immersed from the beginning in the characters and the time period. Can't wait to read the sequel!
