Poisoned Chalice: The Extremely Long and Incredibly Complex Story of Marveman (and Miracleman)[1] by Pádraig ÓMéalóid [2] is really a mystery. The mystery of who owns and owned Marvelman and later Miracleman. Marvelman was a British copy of Fawcett comics Captain Marvel. Which could be considered a copy of Superman who could have been inspired by a novel by Philip Wylie called Gladiator.[3] There's a lot of conjecture in the early part of the book as hard evidence for anything prior to the 1980's revival is lost to time.Even the early history in intriguing since the relationship between Fawcett comics and the British publisher L Miller and Co Ltd is complex. L.Miller Ltd published reprint stories of Fawcett's Captain Marvel character. When Fawcett gave up on a lawsuit with DC Comics and stopped making Captain Marvel L.Miller Ltd needed to come up with some replacement and thus Marvelman was born. Did Fawcett care about this? Clearly Fawcett was getting compensation for the Captain Marvel reprints. Did it get anything for Marvelman? Even ÓMéalóid can't answer that. L.Miller Ltd published Marvelman till the early 60's and dissolved itself as a company in the 1970's. Leaving Marvelman without a copyright holder.[4]ÓMéalóid then goes on to explain what happens in the 1980's when a then unknown writer by the name of Alan Moore comes up with a pitch for Marvelman that gets published in a British magazine. The story is so popular that it comes to the US, but can't be published under the title Marvelman, because of Marvel Comics and becomes Miracleman. This is where it becomes extremely convoluted from an outside perspective, but ÓMéalóid lays it out as clearly as possible and with a lot of tangents[5] to explain how one property interacts with another how several writers and artists own various rights and pieces. All of which had to be ironed out before republication began in 2014.It's an incredibly nuanced and obscure topic well handled here. If that stuff doesn't interest you don't bother getting this, but I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It's written in a, "Hey, did you know this?" kind of style that manages to clarity to a situation full of many details and confusing names. As of this writing Marvel Comics has control of Marvelman (and Miracleman) yet questions are still unanswered, as Neil Gaiman's final Miracleman stories still haven't seen the light of day and Marvel Comics has promised to publish them, so the mystery is ongoing.[1] Or as I like to call it the Extremely Long and Incredibly Complex Title to type out.[2] Four accent marks in a name plus the time it takes to research how to use accent marks on my keyboard=45 minutes.[3] Oddly, It's not mentioned in the book, but Marvel comics owns character called Gladiator which is based on Superman. It goes round and round.[4] Except maybe Mick Anglo.[5] Lots of footnotes. I hope you like footnotes.
This book is thorough and in depth. It reviews the long and convoluted history and side-quests concerning the publication and ownership of the character derived from Captain Marvel and now known as Miracleman. It raises questions never before considered -- did Mick Anglo own ANY rights? -- and it revels in details obtained from primary sources. There is no alternative remotely as authoritative on the subject, which involves many of the most important figures in modern English-language comics.I grew up reading comics in the 80s, and Miracleman as republished in the US by Eclipse was a revelation and an earthquake. Padraig's comprehensive study brings me back to my youth and rekindles that fascination.
This book could only be of interest to comic fans, and then only those maladjusted fans who obsess about every minute detail of their beloved hobby. Even though I am one of those sad cases, I found this a crushingly boring read. I read it to the end hoping against hope that it would somehow reward the effort with some insight into the creative process, but it didn't. It's my own fault because the books doesn't pretend to be an exegesis of the classic Miracle Man comic, It is an exploration of the labyrinthine legal entanglements surrounding the copyrights. If that's your bag, this is the book for you. Cheaper than therapy I guess. Makes George Khoury's fannish 'Kimota' seem like a pulse-pounding thriller by comparison.
The most tangled web of character rights is documented here. A holy grail of the comics world also gets its’ complete oral history. Written in a thorough informative manner with some well placed musings mixed in any comics fan would enjoy this book,
Impeccably researched with an amazing number of footnotes. A fantastic job of clearing the ownership and copyright issues involved with Mr Moran.
